Summer in the Highlands

Near Point Reyes National Seashore, just north of San Francisco and the Golden Gate, the California coast undergoes a remarkable transformation.

Golden hills, oak trees, and valleys of redwood groves give way to sparse, mossy slopes and dramatic, chiseled seaside cliffs. Together with the usually dramatic seaside cloudscapes that roll in over the Pacific, it's a ringer for the highlands or outer Hebridies of Scotland.

Brittney and I managed to catch Point Reyes on a rare sunwashed afternoon for these fashion photographs, shot for her modeling portfolio. The landscape was a gorgeous wonderland of gentle minty greens all the way to the baby-blue horizon—a perfect complement to her warm, colorful fashion.

These frames also make for a wonderful demonstration of the analog technology I used to capture them: 35mm Fuji Pro 400H C-41 / negative film. Fuji negative films are known both for their exceptionally gentle color palette as well as for their impressive highlight-handling range—characteristics that make them an ideal choice to capture colorful style on a gorgeous sunwashed afternoon.
